Doug Swenson/8 Limbs of Yoga & Smaller Branches

Thursday evening September 9th 2010 Doug Swenson made a surprise visit to Jiva Yoga on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Although this event was announced late, Doug Swenson filled the studio with students eager to learn from one America’s greatest yogis.

Jean Rioux (owner) and Doug Swenson

Jean Rioux (studio owner) introduced Doug by saying, “tonight we are treated to a late week infusion of Doug Swenson.” Jean was right in that this was not your ordinary Thursday night yoga class. Doug opened the class with a short lecture about the eight limbs of yoga as described in the Sutras. Although Doug provided some personal interpretation of the eight limbs, his comments were insightful and very contemporary. These comments were followed by a short question and answer session.

As all questions were answered, we began a two hour asana practice. The practice was great! Many advanced asanas were broken down and thoroughly explored. Doug’s unique style explores the “hard and soft” side of practicing yoga with particular emphasis on commitment and honoring your own personal practice. This session included lots of partner work and much good humor.

Doug has a fantastic way of reminding students that all we are doing on the surface is stretching and breathing (something many of us could be reminded of more often). It is a real treat to learn levity from a great master. The night was filled with fun and laughter and we were all witness to Doug’s incredible physical mastery of the asana practice.

Doug was very approachable and willing to answer many questions about his personal experience in Yoga. This is substantial considering he has been practicing asana for well over 45 years! It was a great honor to practice with Doug. If you get the chance to attend one of Doug’s workshops. please do. You will not be disappointed and you will leave refreshed and with a new outlook on your personal practice. Definitely 2 thumbs up!
