I was introduced to Spearhead in the late 90′s and immediately thrilled by the high energy, progressive minded music. Spearhead music is about love and beauty but not necessarily the lovely and the beautiful. They have a way of spinning together sensuality, love, pain and yes sometimes politics in a way that will make you cry tears of joy and sorrow simultaneously.
The Sound of Sunshine is no different. The opening and title track will make your heart leap right out of your chest and will most assuredly make its way onto countless flow yoga music playlists. Despite the albums upbeat qualities, like all of Spearhead’s music, The Sound of Sunshine is straightforward about relationship, friendship and heartache. Most of the works lyrics were written by Michael Franti, Jason Bowman and Carl Young. The poetry is slap you in the face honest, deeply touching, and strikingly beautiful. As always the band also delivers several seriously danceable tracks.
I love the way Michael Franti and Spearhead have slipped into the yoga community bringing a message of peace and love. For me I guess the bottom line is that Spearhead music always makes me feel good. What more can you really ask from a new CD?
