Savannah

The yoga scene is expanding at light speed in Savannah GA. Savannah’s yoga community is second only to Atlanta in the state of Georgia and has practically doubled in the past year adding two new studios in the last eleven months. Namaste Y’all visited Bikram Yoga Savannah on April 6th 2011 just three days short of their one year anniversary.

Bikram Yoga Savannah is an absolutely beautiful space. I’m no interior designer but I have to say that this studio is definitely rockin’ the feng shui. The space is open, uncluttered and free, resembling the mind following the 90 minute 26 posture Bikram series. The beauty and tranquility of Bikram Savannah comes as no surprise given the fact that the owner and director Leslie Tucker Carey holds a master’s degree in historic preservation from the area’s esteemed art school Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).

Leslie began the path of Bikram Yoga after observing significant physical and psychological transformation in a close friend as a result of a dedicated Bikram practice. The practice healed Leslie of old chronic running injuries and the rest is history. The city of Savannah is incredibly lucky to have this gem of a studio tucked into the trendy Ardsley Park district. Bikram Yoga Savannah is nestled in the Habersham Village Shopping Center among quaint shops and eateries.

I attended a class led by Kristopher Bristol. Kris delivered a truly inspired class, attending to all alignment issues and gently but firmly encouraging his students to work toward their greatest potential. I left feeling relaxed and lifted from the class. The environment at the studio is friendly and nurturing. If you practice Bikram yoga or are thinking about giving it a try this studio is a must visit while in Savannah! The reality is that everyone could use a little more Bikram Yoga so don’t miss this wonderful opportunity.

The Yoga Co-op

The Yoga Co-op is a great studio in the midtown area of Savannah, located at 2424 Drayton Street.  The Co-op is very much like other studios in many ways but has one very important difference.  You can become a member of the Co-op much like a membership to a food co-op.  This can be important if you are a Savannah resident and a yoga junkie like me.  Your membership makes you eligible for discounts on classes, workshops, and in the store.  In addition, members attend the quarterly Prajna event, as well as some of the other special events, free!  Prajna is a special quarterly class or satsang, usually taught by co-op teachers and followed by a potluck, a guest speaker, a movie, or special event.  Sunday satsang is a discussion led by one of the co-op teachers on any topic involving yoga.  These special events, combined with a cozy lounge area in the entrance to the main studio, give the co-op a community vibe that we love.

The co-op has one studio capable of holding around 25 practitioners snugly, and a Loft studio upstairs that is very cozy, capable of holding 6 practitioners. The decor is very current and warm.  Both studios are in a larger L.E.E.D. certified building.

The Yoga Co-op offers a variety of classes, including Jivamukti, Power, Vinyasa, Yin, Ashtanga, and Hot yoga.  In addition to this great selection of classes, meditation and age 55+ classes are offered.  The Co-op also offers a wide variety of workshops and community building events.

Studios – 1 studio capable of holding 25 practitioners tightly, and a small, cozy loft studio that can hold 6.

Amenities – 1 full bathroom with bathtub and shower, full kitchen, lounge with wi-fi.  A water fountain with filtered water, tea pot, and a variety of teas are available.  Free sweat towels.

Flooring – Laminate

Bodywork – N/A

Childcare – N/A

Store – The store, Surya Threads, is run by teacher Christine Glover. There is a great selection, including apparel, mats, props, books, and DVD’s.  The clothing selection focuses on sustainably made, natural materials, many organics. And Christine has worked with local designers to create one-of-a-kind, beautiful yoga clothing for sale at the co-op. Aloe vera juice and coconut water available for purchase.

Parking – The Co-op has a small lot across the street which will fill up.  There is also street parking.  We reccommend parking on 40th St. if the lot is full.

Vibration – Relaxing, current, grounded and bright, with a community vibe.

The Yoga Room

The Yoga Room of Savannah, GA is located on Whitemarsh Island, about halfway between downtown Savannah and Tybee Beach. It is a cozy studio tucked upstairs in a small, homey office building, offering hatha flow yoga Level I, II, Hot Power Vinyasa, and Prenatal Yoga.

Sophie makes it all look easy

The Secret Weapon of The Yoga Room is its owner, Sophie Amick. She is a wonderful instructor and yogi. Her Level I class leaves me feeling open, blissfully aware and deeply calm, all at once. Her Level II and hot Power Vinyasa classes are talked about all around town for their fun factor and unapologetic willingness to work on challenging arm balances of all crazy varieties!

If you are visiting Tybee, this is your closest studio (a quick and beautiful 15 minute drive through the marsh).

Studios – 1 studio, capable of holding around 20 practitioners.

Amenities – 1 unisex, single person bathroom, water cooler with filtered water.

Flooring – Lovely hardwood floors

Bodywork – N/A

Childcare – N/A

Store – There are a few items for sale: clothing, incense, CD’s, props.

Parking – Parking lot surrounds the building. Since the Yoga Room is in the midst of a small shopping center, if the lot is full there is plenty of street parking on Charlotte (which is actually a road through the shopping center) or in the adjacent lots to the studio.

Vibration – Peaceful, calming, grounding even in the challenging classes. I really get the feeling that the ancient tradition of yoga is being infused into me by osmosis at the Yoga Room.
