Yoga One

Yoga One is a vibrant and cozy space located in a cool little shopping center at 1111 Central Avenue, very close to downtown Charlotte.  You enter the studio from upstairs at street level, and as you walk downstairs the walls around you are covered with the inspiring graffiti of yogis who have passed through the stairway before you.  I was literally stopped in my tracks by the sight of the wall to take in all the positive vibrations before I ever fully entered the space!  The space itself is a delicious, visual treat, with vibrant color, beautiful statues and art, and super-inspiring words all around.  For me this studio just feels like home: inviting, very comfortable, with everything you need right where you need it.

The studio houses two practice rooms, one of which can probably hold 50 people, and the other is a little smaller, with gorgeous oak floors.  The large studio has one mirrored wall with curtains that can be pulled over the mirrors.  It also has a very nice sound system, I have to add… speakers hung on the ceiling, spreading the sound evenly and clearly throughout the room.  Much care has been taken to make the reception area as important as the practice spaces, which I think really contributes to the hominess of the studio.  There are two cozy sitting areas, a large boutique selling everything from clothes to props to books, music and more, water fountains, and filtered water.  They have the best and coziest changing room I have ever seen, with a communal space containing lockers and a mirrored vanity, plus a couple of changing ‘rooms’ separated by curtains.  The night I visited Yoga One, I was attending a workshop by visiting teacher Andrea Boyd, so I did not get to experience one of the local instructors; however, many of them were present that night, and I could feel a strong sense of community coming from them all!

Yoga One is a Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga affiliate studio.  All classes are hot (94°), and they offer all-levels, level 2, deep stretch, power basics, and $5 all levels classed taught by Baptiste teachers in-training.  There is also a 7-week series called ‘Breakthrough Basics’ that focuses on one aspect of the Baptiste practice each week.  Students who complete all 7 weeks receive a 3 class gift card.  Some classes have 1-2 assistants, which makes for lots of personal attention!

Studio: 2 studios, one capable of holding around 50 practitioners, the other space a little smaller.

Amenities: 2 nice sitting areas, a huge unisex dressing area with 2 individual dressing ‘rooms,’ curtained off.  Also available are lockers, a mirrored vanity, and one unisex restroom.

Flooring: Oak

Bodywork: N/A

Childcare: N/A

Store: Extensive boutique selling clothing, mats, props, books, music, gifts, and lots of stuff!

Parking: Plenty of parking behind building, well-marked for Yoga One.

Vibration: Positive, abundant, vibrant… comfortable and homey.  Just go and feel it for yourself!

Yoga Flex

Yoga Flex is a great studio on the south side of Charlotte off Rea Road.  The studio is both efficient and elegant at the same time. The lobby/store has the feel of an energetic salon.  Yoga Flex has two bathrooms, both well kept and very modern.  The practice studio is very nice, painted a soothing light blue.  The floor is hardwood.  The instruction wall is mirrored and there are several nice second floor windows.  I found everyone I encountered to be very friendly and helpful.

Yoga Flex is primarily a flow studio with an emphasis on Power styles and Asthanga yoga.  In addition, hot, deep stretch, and community classes are offered.  I took a primary series class at Yoga Flex very early Saturday morning that had nearly 20 practitioners!  The energy and the instruction were both great.  Yoga Flex offers great workshops and teacher trainings.

If you are visiting this studio for the first time, give yourself a couple of extra minutes to find the studio, as it is nestled in a large shopping complex.

Studio – 1 studio, easily capable of supporting 40+ practitioners.

Amenities – 2 water fountains, 2 universal bathrooms, mats and towels available.

Flooring – Hardwood (light colored maybe pine), the back half of the studio transitions to a laminate.

Bodywork – N/A

Childcare – N/A

Store – Extensive apparel, mats, yogi toes, books, DVDs, CDs, bottled water, practice rugs, and a variety of props.

Parking – Plenty of parking in the building’s parking lot.
