YOGAlicious Yoga Studio

Adrienne Ables, Monica Foster, & Catherine Querin founded YOGAlicious Yoga Studio in September of 2006. Before that, we had all been successfully teaching yoga throughout Spartanburg and saw the need for a centralized location. We found a small

space in the heart of downtown Spartanburg, hung our shingle out, and we were open for business! Over the years, YOGAlicious has grown and we now have 10 teachers, in addition to the three of us, and five work-trade staff. In September of 2010, we expanded into our new downtown location in the Bijou Building at 147 E. Main St. – between Carolina Cash and Diamond Jewelers. We are convenient to local businesses, restaurants, and shops and offer free parking in the Carolina Cash parking lot on Broad Street. A cozy sitting area and retail store welcomes you to our studio.

At YOGAlicious, we truly believe that yoga is for everybody. Our goal is to provide our community with knowledgeable and experienced teachers who promote a safe and compassionate environment. We offer an array of classes 7 days a week and various workshops throughout the year. We are a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School and offer 225 hour training programs.  For further info and class schedules visit We look forward to seeing you in the studio soon!

Offering Power, Flow, Hot and Yoga Wall classes, as well as Yoga for Men, Kids, Beginners and more, Zen Garden Yoga provides a relaxed, eco-friendly space where a student can allow their mind, body and spirit to ‘just be.’

“Our goal is to holistically support, nurture and expand the horizons of our students,” said instructor and owner Lisa Muehlenbein.  “By offering classes, workshops, teacher trainings and special events, we are striving to create a larger yoga community in the Upstate.”

Located on the lower level of the Hillcrest Specialty Row on the East side of Spartanburg, SC, Zen Garden also offers massage and acupuncture.

We thought we’d let Lisa introduce you to the studio and tell you all about it:

Green Studio

“Being Eco-Friendly is very important to Zen Garden Yoga.  When we do well for the Planet and our environment, we all benefit.  So, what makes ZGY ‘green?’

Zen Garden features massage, acupuncture and a Yoga Wall.

  • The awning outside and our tinted windows provide passive cooling in the summer and heat retention in the winter, allowing us to limit energy consumption.
  • In addition to being certified as “cradle-to-cradle,” the Shaw berber-style carpet in our boutique has jute backing and is recyclable.
  • Our countertop is constructed of Teragren bamboo, and the paint throughout the studio is Harmony Low-VOC (volatile organic compound) from Sherwin Williams.
  • The flooring in the yoga studio is made from an FSC certified hardwood and is sustainably harvested.
  • We have even gone so far as to install Bio-VCT tile in the bathrooms!  The Bio-VCT is more eco-conscious and is adhered with non-toxic adhesive.  All of the light bulbs throughout the studio are CFL’s to maximize energy efficiency.
  • In addition to clothing made of traditional materials like cotton and modal, our “eco-chic” boutique carries clothing lines that utilize sustainable fibers like organic cotton, bamboo and hemp.  These fabrics feel ahhh-mazing against the skin!
  • The yoga mats we offer for use are by JADE yoga.  They are made of open-cell, natural rubber (a renewable resource) and are PVC-free.  Plus, as an added bonus, Jade plants a tree for every yoga mat sold, so we have helped plant more than 25 trees before we even opened our doors!

Zen Garden opens its doors with a wide variety of yoga, massage and acupuncture.

Classes: We offer yoga classes for all levels, beginning with our children, who are natural born yogis, as well as supporting our new students, prenatal students and those who wish to pursue an advanced asana practice.  For an added bonus, we have installed a YogaWall to take the practice beyond your expectations.

Lisa Muehlenbein, E-RYT 200, Owner and Instructor

In addition to being a busy mom of 4 kids and active community volunteer, Lisa is the owner of Zen Garden Yoga.  She has been involved in the health and fitness industry since 1992 and holds many different certifications.   As well as being a Mentor with the Leeann Carey Yoga Teacher Training program, Lisa also holds a degree in Early Childhood Education from Youngstown State University.

Lisa has been practicing yoga since 1992.  She is a certified Group Fitness instructor and Personal Trainer as well.  When Lisa began teaching yoga in 2002, her pursuit of becoming an RYT began.  She couldn’t wait to learn more with each workshop she attended.  After becoming an RYT-200 in 2006, Lisa completed the 1,000 hours of teaching required to become and E-RYT 200.  Since then, Lisa has travelled the country, sharing her passion for yoga by teaching others how to become teachers.  Lisa has followed her passion and attained her RYT 500 through Leeann Carey.  She supports the Leeann Carey teaching method of ‘teaching the student, not just teaching the pose.’

Owner and Zen Garden instructor Lisa Muehlenbein

“To me, yoga is a place where you can be.  I don’t necessarily mean ‘be’ like a physical location like home or work.  I mean ‘be.’  Truly ‘be.’  Where else can you give yourself permission to accept yourself and those around you for what they really are?  It’s a raw, sometimes scary place, but one that provides a clear view inside the looking glass.  There is no judgment about what one can or cannot do, or whether my butt looks big in these yoga pants.  It’s a place where I can feel at one with the body I am living in.  Breathing and moving at my own pace and with my own breath.

“Yoga is a place where I can be at peace with the person that I am and not having to pretend to be something that I am not.  Does this just happen on the mat during asana?  Absolutely not!  Living yoga off the mat is just as important as the asana practice.  How we treat ourselves and others, what we think and what we say.  That’s yoga.  How we breathe and how we react to the person that just cut us off while driving down the highway.  That’s yoga.  Having compassion for ourselves and those around us.  That’s yoga.  Being good, doing good.  Now THAT, is yoga.”
