Boundless Yoga

A space in which to foster change on the 2nd floor of Boundless Yoga in Washington D.C.

Washington DC’s Boundless Yoga has a clear mission statement: to foster transformation.  This focus on change starts by teaching students about the tools that they already have within them to connect to energy in the body.  And it’s quite a stunning space for this practice.  Boundless is where you come to turn on the lights and have a look around.

The name says it all, so you check your limitations at the door here.  Perhaps Boundless founder and instructor Kim Weeks said it best: “Judgment of anyone or anything puts pressure on the heart.”

In 2002, Kim left a stressful corporate world and created Boundless Yoga in Washington.  When Boundless started, she would walk around the neighborhood with her mat and people would ask her where she practiced.  Now with something like 27 teachers on the roster, Boundless has a treasure chest of experience and knowledge to offer to local and visiting students.

Boundless Yoga is found on U Street, just down the street from the African American Civil War Memorial.

The new location at Boundless is already a neighborhood landmark.  Located on U Street in a marvelously restored space, just down the street from the African American Civil War Memorial in north Washington, Boundless Yoga is both a yoga studio and a training institution.  It’s all about harnessing energy here.  Whether it’s classes, workshops or energy work, you can practice yoga with some of the most phenomenal and experienced teachers in Washington.  You’ll also run into some of the most exceptional yoga workshops in D.C. on the Boundless schedule.

The magnificent first floor space at Boundless Yoga.

Boundless offers a RYT-200 Advanced Studies Program, as well as a RYT-500 Program and an Energy Training Program for those interested in the growing field of Energy Medicine.  New yoga teachers may also be curious about the unique Boundless Teaching Apprenticeship, giving instructors-in-training the opportunity for a 6-month long practical apprenticeship alongside a veteran Boundless teacher.

The focus is alignment, and the new Boundless space is a sacred spot that’s just beautiful and fun to practice in.  Bravo, and Namaste, Boundless!

Classes/Programs: Open, Flow Express, Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced, Candlelight Flow, Pranayama and Meditation, Prenatal.  Privates are available.  RYT-200 Advanced Studies Program, RYT-500 Program, Energy Medicine Program, Boundless Teaching Apprenticeship.

Enjoy peace within at Boundless as Washington rushes by outside.

Studios/Flooring: One fabulous space downstairs, one magnificent space above, both with astonishing hard wood floor.  Enjoy the sunlight coming in from the neighborhood outside while you practice in peace.

Workshops: Some of the best workshops in D.C. and beyond … check a filled schedule for more.

Amenities: Bathroom and changing rooms available for students.

A view from upstairs at Boundless Yoga ... a great place to change your perspective.

Parking and Getting There: You’re best bet is to take the Metro, if possible, and save the parking for another time.  The U Street/African American Civil War Memorial Metro station on the Yellow and Green Lines is right across the street from Boundless.

Vibration: A focus on alignment and a focus on energy in the body.  The possibilities are limitless with such an authentic and disciplined approach to yoga.

_____________

Flow Yoga Center

You'll find Flow Yoga Center on P Street, not far from Dupont Circle.

Flow Yoga Center embraces transformation through yoga.  Allowing the ebb and flow of life is the lesson here.  It’s a philosophy that’s evident when you take a class at this yoga center.  At Flow, yoga allows us freedom to find choices that become catalysts for action.  These choices affect us and our communities.

Plus, asana and movement are just fun.  They’re what keep us coming back, at first.  You feel that pre-class, pre-concert electricity when you walk up the stairs to the second floor, the bottom floor of Flow Yoga Center.  Students come here for transformation and lila, the play of form in our asana practice.  It’s a center for heart study, and as you walk down the hall to your class space, sunlight blasting through your ears, heart blowing the doors open, yogis smiling and laughing and rolling out their mats open to enjoy and to learn, you can’t help but wonder: maybe this is how we begin to apply it.

The 2nd floor studio at Flow Yoga Center

The community is the foundation.  You see that application and admire it in the teaching at Flow Yoga Center.  The classes, courses and workshops are far beyond exercise.  This is where we study yoga—it’s a 7,000 year old philosophy that can change your life.  And we do it together.

Acupuncture, massage, Zero Balancing, nutrition, life coaching and yoga therapy are offered as holistic health therapies at Flow Yoga Center.  Many Flow Yoga Center instructors are yoga therapists that are trained in the therapeutic application of yoga to heal and improve overall well-being.  Therapists are available for both private and small group yoga therapy sessions.  Private instruction for yoga, meditation, Pilates and dance are also on the menu.  This is, without a doubt, a center for transforming lives.

The large third floor studio at Flow Yoga Center allows room for transformation.

Flow Yoga Center even has a program designed to bring yoga to your office—yoga for you or your employees.  Bringing yoga into the stressful part of your life is the work of this practice.

And of course, aspiring teachers are welcome at Flow Yoga Center’s 200-hour certification program.  Beginning each fall, you can immerse yourself in over 200 hours with senior Flow Teachers led by Debra Perlson-Mishalove and special guests.

Flow Yoga Center is also a model for ‘an environmentally conscious and socially responsible way to run a business.’  Flow Yoga Center founded the Green Yoga Association, dedicated to fostering ecological consciousness, reverence and action in the yoga community.  It’s about living this practice instead of just practicing a few times per week.  Through weekly donation classes, fundraisers and service to the community, Flow’s Seva program gives back to the D.C. and global communities.  Flow Yoga Center supports two out of local D.C. charities: Anahata Grace and One Common Unity.

And this place is listening.  Flow seeks feedback from their students through surveys and focus groups, which allows the center to better serve the needs of their students.  Take a look at Flow Yoga Center’s local and visiting teachers.

This a hub for yoga and a definite on your list if you’re taking a D.C Yoga tour.  What a place, what a feeling, what a gateway and what a studio in which to study the ebb and flow of this life.

The smaller third floor studio at Flow Yoga Center-even more space for change in your life.

Studios/Flooring: All hard wood flooring that shines in all three studios.  A large studio on the third floor sits on top of the spacious second floor studio, with another small studio also adjoining on the third.  DC Yoga space with love, at its best.

Workshops: Welcome to DC’s body and movement college.  Everything from yoga dance, yoga therapy, acro yoga, advanced asana classes, therapy clinics, anatomy classes, chakra studies and life coaching.  Visiting teachers have included Shiva Rea, MC Yogi, Seane Corn, Sharon Gannon and David Life, to name just a few.

Classes: Fundamentals, All Levels, Gentle Flow, Yin Yoga, Yoga Nidra, Anusara-Inspired, Iyengar, Vinyasa Flow, Ashtanga, Jivamukti, Prana Flow, Mysore, Yoga Ecstasy Hour, Acro Yoga, Midnight Flow, Prenatal, Yoga Mama and Baby, Meditation, Pilates, Fitness, Dance.  Check a filled schedule for more.

Amenities: There’s a bathroom with a shower on the third floor, with changing rooms on the second floor.

Enjoy a fabulous boutique and a warm space for lounging with friends before and after class at Flow Yoga Center.

Getting There/Parking: If you’re driving, allow at least 15 minutes to find a spot.  Plenty of bike racks are available outside the studio and in front of Whole Foods Market.  Flow is a 10-minute walk from the Dupont Circle metro stop (red line) and Mcpherson Square metro stop (blue/orange line).

Vibration: This is where they teach you to find vibration in your heart and to know it when you’re off the mat.  All one can say is ‘thank you’ to the Flow community for doing what you do.

STROGA

Imagine practicing yoga in a ballroom built for early 1900s parties in Washington, D.C.  You’ll feel like royalty in this space.  Today, we all have an invitation to this party.

Words just cannot do justice to describe this studio.  It’s time to shine in this room, which is wide, wide open.  The windows swing out to let in the sounds of Washington rushing by outside, but you’re breathing and a breeze reminds you that you’re still here, you’re okay, no matter how fast you had to go to get here.

Located in the L’Aiglon Building at the junction of Columbia Road, Adams Mill and 18th Street, expect to practice yoga in a ballroom or a library fit for royalty.  In our day, it’s fit for anyone who is wide open to the possibilities of a yoga journey.

The Adams Morgan area of D.C. lies between Rock Creek Park and Meridian Hill Park in the northwest part of the city.  You might have quite a walk from the red Metro line to the west or the yellow and green lines to the east, so check the bus schedules from your location.

STROGA is strength training plus yoga.  Owner Doug Jefferies was inspired by his own yoga practice that had complimented his personal training and strength conditioning.  He wanted students to have the option to gain more mobility and flexibility with yoga.

Find a space to open your heart at STROGA.

With a rich history as a private residence and as commercial property, the three floors at STROGA are home to fine woodwork, stain glass and plaster moldings that have been preserved for a space that will leave you speechless as you roll out your mat.

Studios/Fooring: The 2nd Floor studio is capable of accommodating over 100 students.  Absolutely gorgeous library on floor 1 for multiple classes, as well as a fitness center on the third.  Hard wood throughout this enormous facility.

Amenities: Lockers and Showers on the third floor, bathrooms on all 3.

Gorgeous space on STROGA's first floor, your own personal growth room.

Classes: STROGA offers over 13 different types of yoga classes.  We’re talking Vinyasa Flow, Ashtanga, Restorative, Power, Warm classes, Yoga Fundamentals and Community classes to name a few.  Group classes, specialty workshops and private instruction are also offered.

Parking: If you’re driving, good luck finding a space.  You’re better off walking or using the buses to get here.

Vibration: You know you’re someone special when you walk up the stairs to practice in this grandiose space.  It’s something you will take with you forever.  Not to be missed.
